A minimum of 13 passengers lose their lives and 98 hurt in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” affirmed the national leader.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those involved.

Flagship Project of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his leadership's economic vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in national infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised persistent apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the loss of life "requires immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital initiatives.
